Default Computer Problems (not sure if software or hardware)

Basically, my friend's computer does a number of things. For one, on boot his mouse/keyboard don't work sometimes and he has to reboot several times in order to get them working. Once they work, they stay working. Until they crash, that is. by crash, I mean it freezes. Also, one time his computer started to "beep rapidly like a bomb", so he had to reboot twice (keyboard didn't work the first time. Any diagnosis?

And I don't have access to it, this was over AIM

error beeps can mean a number of things.

If they feel comfortable they could reseat components inside the computer, primarily memory chips and expansion cards. Memory is a likely suspect component here since those typically cause errors beeps and/or crashes in the system. that would be the best place to start.

What if the beeps only happened once?

Default other things to consider

Also is this XP/Vista? And is his keyboard/mouse set up new or old and/or wireless /Bluetooth? Most mouse/keyboards you buy in store or online come with CDs yes. But the drivers are out dated. If he has new software installed and its vista then it could be a compatibility issue and or outdated drivers. If this is to be the problem then he could just go to there respective websites to download drivers for both. And as for the beeping. My pc beeped on me before and I got the horrible “blue screen” and a reboot was able to quiet her down. I just may have been lucky.

Anywho , good luck

With this little information, the only course of action would be to do a full system clean up.

Ahh I see. Well if all else fails and if he hasn’t already. He could do basic cleaning of the system. Like virus/spy ware scans and maybe run the disk defragmenter. This way he can say he did or tried everything. Or maybe he could even do system restore and take back to a more stable state. Good Luck. p.s this is a great place for computer help. It helped me out when I had a nasty virus. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

Around these parts we generally recommend our very own Tarun's Anti-Malware toolkit - http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...38&postcount=1

Lord Mythirion - we really need more details - basics such as processor, memory, xp version, graphics card etc. If he can't supply this information over (hnnnggg) AIM, get him to pop over here and make an account. Only takes a couple of minutes.

It sounds like hardware problem. The first place I would look, given the lack of info, is the power supply. It could be that the power supply is giving out and/or not giving the system the proper Reset signal on start-up.
But on the other hand, it could be many other things such as accumulated dust keeping the fans from working, loose connections, bad motherboard, etc. Too many things to diagnose here.

Argh I was afraid of this. I'm going to try to get some more info then.
